Good stethoscopes will cost you a couple of hundred bucks. Decent ophthalmoscopes can cost as much. Who can afford them when you're a medical student with hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt? But you can afford a quality reflex hammer and oh man will it make a difference in your neuro exam!
This hammer is heavy to carry around, but it's lighter than MDF Trömner Hammer > MDF 555 > Red Spice > Garnet. To get a reflex, you just let the weight do its work. You don't swing this hammer. The hammer will bounce back nicely and get the reflex (as long as you hit the right spot).
Babinski tip is too sharp, I thought, to use on patients. I use it for sharp sensation instead. The tip can be screwed off for a brush inside but I don't use brush for neuro exam. And the brush has cheap feeling to it. It's the only part of this hammer that feels cheap. The other hammer that I mentioned above feels nicer (and heavier) and it doesn't have a screwed tip that feels cheap. But you can't use the end of the handle for babinski, either, as it's too blunt.
It gets 4 stars because it doesn't have a useful babinski tip for me. I don't mind the weight because my pockets are already full and heavy anyway, but that could be a deal breaker for someone. And you need the weight to do a good, consistent whacking. I've used the taylor one, way too light and hard to get good reflex. The one with round head is a lot better than the taylor one at getting the reflexes but they come in only two ways: one you cannot fold the head and retract the pole, which is too large and too long to fit in a white coat, or one you can fold the head and retract the pole that you need to tighten the screw the head every now and then. This one is the best I feel. Best at getting reflexes, solid, and small enough to fit into a white coat pocket.
So yeah, it's, what, $20 more expensive than the taylor one or so, but it does make a huge difference. Get either of the tromner and it will make your life a bit easier.

The "hammer" to use!

Forget the cheapo tomahawk style hammers the pharmaceutical companies give you... The oral board reviewers will fail you even for having the nerve to bring that into the exam room. This hammer is well constructed with what appears to be solid steel and unscrewable tips. The brand name is imprinted on one side of the handle and the other is free for any engraving. The end is not sharp enough for an effective babinski. The heft aids immensely in eliciting good brachioradialis and achilles... simply a pleasure to use.

I used to carry around one of those cheap Taylor things (trianglular head). An attending came in the room during my physical exam, grabbed my Taylor and threw it in the trash, first humiliating me in front of my patient and second forcing me to buy a real hammer. When my colleagues saw this they described it as 'hardcore'. It has quite bit of weight in it so does the job well. The smaller end is useful for brachial reflexes and such. The Babinski tip is rather shrap and I haven't used it on a patient. The brush is okay but you're probably better off asking the nurse for a disposable one. I think it's quite nice but then I'm no neurologist.
