4SunZi Rotary Hammer

By Fair Comment

Just received this SunZi Rotary hammer from Amazon. If you're pondering a rotary hammer, read on.

As a heavy DIY'er, I look for quality tools in applications that see a lot of use. On the other hand, with tools for occasional use only, sometimes a sturdy Chinese knock off will suffice. By that measure, the SunZi looks up for the task. It is quite heavy, and a bit crude, yet has the features and characteristics of the old school single speed ~800 RPM rotary hammer its clearly a copy of.

Rotary hammers are way, way better than hammer drills for concrete. The 1" SDS hammer drill is the most popular size, and SDS (AKA: "SDS plus") bits/accessories are available everywhere. Note: you CANNOT use standard shank bits in SDS hammer drills. Adaptor chucks are available (~$50) for straight drilling, but NOT for hammer drilling (which will very quickly demolish the chuck).

If you search on Amazon, no name Chinese rotary hammers that look (in the pictures) just like this one are available at half the price. On the other hand, US brand name Chinese rotary hammers (like de' certain bright yellow ones) are available at 3 - 4 times the price. I think SunZi is a decent middle of the road DIY choice. If you're a contractor, buy the best Mikwaukee, Bosch, or Hilti hammer you can find.

BTW, I also looked over the hammer drills at HF, which - for the same money - are on the wrong side of that road IMHO: exposed bearings, greased (vs sealed) components, flimsy motors, etc. Not a good choice for working in concrete and dirt, even occasionally.

My only other general comment applies to any AC power tool with a brush type commutator: try not to let the tool (drill in this case) bog down (lose RPM) under load. Doing so will allow applied electrical current to quickly exceed the motor's commutation limits - and burned brushes/commutators will inevitably result. High end tools have more headroom in this regard; some of the lesser models (eg, HF) have virtually none at all. Rotary fuses, we calls 'em.

The SunZi switchgear (mode selector; operator switch) are pretty stoneaxe, but usable. You will need a strong hand to turn the undersized mode switch. And, you'll need a strong arm to lift and manuever this really heavy drill. It's not smooth under load, like the higher end shock isolated hammers, so take off your wrist watch first if you value it. The depth indicator rod is too short for anything other than short masonary bits. I'll probably substitute a longer piece of rod. The carrying case is mediocre though usable. If you remove drill bits from the cheesy blow molding, it will just smush when you try and replace them. And those (3) drill bits are metric (largest is 12mm; ~13/32"), so you'll need some US SDS bits for standard US size anchors, shields, lags, etc. I ordered Bosch SDS+ bits from Amazon with the SunZi.

The SunZi reportedly has a 2 yr warranty, via the importer in Chicago. No idea how much that is worth, though on paper the warranty period is way better than HF, and competitive with brand name hammers.

I'll be boring ~(35) 5/8" x 4" holes in really hard concrete next week, and will report here if any problems.

HAPPY HAMMERIN' !

5100 bucks wow

By cjc5151

I couldn't believe it when I saw this for 100 bucks. I'm a concrete contractor and when my other drill blew up I needed something quick. This drill has held up way above expectations. I use it every day and beat it up but it has peformed great. Right on par with the big names and in many ways out worked the drills I've had in the past. I don't know how sunzi keeps their cost down but I'm sold. Keep it up, great tool, great quality, great price, great buy!!!

5GREAT PRODUCT

By M Stewart

I purchased this product to chip out some stubborn ceramic tile. The chisel that came with it is 3/4 inch and would have taken too long so I purchased a wider 2 1/2 inch chisel, which was much more efficient. I had 70 sq ft of ceramic tile that had been put down with some type of thinset that was EXTREMELY difficult to chip out but this tool worked great. I have not tried the other bits yet so I can't comment on those functions at this time but for what I needed, this tool held up.
