It's all about the electronic controllers

First, this is genuinely a fantastic brushless drill.
When talking about brushless motors, electronic switches and lithium technology for that matter,
it's important to understand the controllers that govern that tool.
Starting w/ the ever important lithium battery pack,
Hitachi takes great effort on making sure each cell doesn't get overcharged (which kills cells)
and also no overdischarge (which also kills cells)
This effort, on just the lithium packs, confirms Hitachis' focus on the ever-important electronic controllers. They got this aspect nailed!
(quite frankly, the future of machines is the 'software'..example: ecu and engine mapping in cars)
The optical trigger is smooth & predictable with four speeds on just the trigger,
the dreaded 'overshoot is all but eliminated.
One great plus of an electronic optical trigger, it will not wear out.
(the speed settings do a excellent job on dialing the amount needed,
maaaybe a bit of overlap on the speed choices, but hey,,,better more than not)
Handling & ergonomics are spot on in my opinion,
sure there are cordless setups that are lighter or heavier ones w/ more torque,
but DV18DBL hits the sweet spot..
The clutching works well w/ lots of settings,
but being a drill and not an impact setup, the hammer aspect is one spot on clutch dial & is determined by the drill speed chosen,
if that makes sense.
For torque, I needed to drill about twenty four 1 3/4" holes in a some 2x12s'
that's a fairly stout ask for a cordless setup, the Hitachi handled it and didn't get hot or fade.
Overall, Hitachi clearly did their homework.
Understanding that brushless is the future of efficiency in lithium tools,
you'd be hard pressed to find a more sorted brushless drill than the DV18DBL for its power/weight performance.

~~ Consider getting a Irwin 3567841C 3/8" Square Drive, if you don't already have a socket adapter.

I was dubious about the manufacturer's lifetime warranty. I dropped my drill and it stopped working. There goes $280, I thought. No way. They actually fixed my drill, no questions asked for the 17 dollars it took me to ship it there. All I had to do was send the package with my phone number inside. Love it.

Just recieved it for Cristmas .
Battery lasts & lasts.
Up against my old 19v nicad therew was no contest, the 18v lithium-ion has more power and the battery lasts 3 times longer than the 19v nicad.
