Too fast for any bits ove 1/2 inch. Poor low speed control.

I purchased this to bore 1 inch diameter holes through two layers of 1 inch wood siding on a 70 year old cottage. Have to drill lots of holes to blow in insulation.
Using a 1 inch Irwin Speedbore bit. I tried the drill in my shop on a hardwood log and it functioned nicely.
The problem comes in when you are up on a ladder and conditions are not so perfect as in the shop. The bit breaks out of the wood at times and the drill revs up burning and dulling the bit. I do not understand who needs an 850 RPM drill with a half inch chuck. Larger diameter bits require lower RPM and more torque. While this drill has plenty of torque, the cutting speed is too fast even for wood. When the bit grabs, the drill does slow down but it should never get up to 850 RPM in the first place.
Several of my power tools have little speed limiting dials built into the trigger switch. This extra 10 cents worth of plastic would solve the speed control problem with this drill..
This is a nice drill and has a place for drilling smaller diameter holes. I would not recommend this for hole saws, spade or boring bits. I hope I can exchange it for the Rigid Spade Handle Drill which has a max of 500 RPM. Lower speed drills are priced at over 300 dollars.

tested it; good drill, heavy-duty 1/2-inch chuck, variable speed; exactly same model at home depot is $99 so it's a reseller trying to make a killing on amazon

i prefer this over milwaukee. has good momentum for plowing through stainless at work. i love it. i would say get one.
