Compared with Makita BHP454

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RVNKILF7NJ6Q7 This drill is quite similar to the Makita BHP454 18V hammer drill kit. I made this quick little video to show how they both drill through a brick and how the LED light shines differently. The light position is different, with the Makita's LED near the trigger and Bosch's LED on top of the base. They're pretty evenly matched in performance. What I like most about the Bosch is the battery charge indicator light on the back of the battery, which the Makita does not have. I also prefer the Bosch silent battery charger with simple easy to understand charge status indicators, over the Makita's noisy-fan charger with its unusual charge indicators. Both are great hammer drills, and I'd say you can't go wrong with either one, but I give a slight edge to Bosch because of the battery and charger, plus it has more torque at 700 in-lbs vs. Makita's 560 in-lbs.

Amazing what you can do with a tool that fits in one hand...

The first thing to note about this drill/driver is that the battery doesn't know when to quit. Today I brought the drill, two full batteries and the charger to work, expecting that after hours of drilling out holes, removing powdercoat from steel with a wire brush wheel, running taps, I'd be jumping between half-charged batteries until I up and quit. I can't even tell you how many minutes this drill spent at full speed before the first battery hit the wall, because I quit for the day before the drill did. Absolutely amazing, the second battery and charger never even came out of my bag.
The selector switch for high torque and high speed was an easy miss at first, but now I check it every time. It seemed like my old 12v Black and Decker could drill a hole faster than this beast could, I was utterly shocked, until I found the switch on top and switched it to high speed. The rate at which I drilled through a 1/4 steel plate actually frightened me, I was through that plate before I even had a chance to react and marred the worktable surface beneath it pretty darn good.
This drill has a lot of heft to it, but it's also perfectly balanced, not too heavy up top and not too heavy in the battery, so using it in awkward positions is actually quite comfortable. The chassis of the whole drill just feels so solid. The trigger is smooth and it's easy to hit and hold the RPMs that you're aiming for. The light is perfectly positioned to illuminate the work area without getting blocked by your hands or workpieces. The case it comes in is even of quality construction, and two batteries and a beefy charger will keep you working many hours before even having to think about hanging it up for the day.
On price, it's definitely up there. You can find a thousand drills for cheaper, and some might be great, but I can tell you, after working with this drill for the past several days non-stop, if you want a tool that you can rely on, that'll keep working even longer than you, can take a beating, then you can't turn this drill down as a seriously good investment. And, personally, I think it's pretty nice looking to boot.

Excellent drill for tough jobs

I compared this drill against a 14.4 volt Craftsman that I have used for years and the Bosch HDS181-02 compact drill driver. They all have the same basic features: keyless chuck, clutch, work light, two speeds and a spare battery. However, there are some differences between them. First, this drill is significantly heavier than the compact Bosch. As a result, it's a little tougher to use in awkward spaces, such as overhead. However, unlike the compact version it has a very easy to use auxiliary handle that can quickly be adjusted to any position on the body of the drill, so you can drill with two hands. Of course, this is less useful when you are trying to start a screw. The Bosch is significantly superior to the Craftsman I have been using until now. The Craftsman has lower voltage and lower RPMs. Also, the Craftsman's work light is so dim that it isn't particularly useful, whereas the Bosch's light provides very nice illumination if you are working in a dark area. The Craftsman I have also does not have a hammer drill capability. I have not used that feature yet on the Bosch, but it is supposed to make tough work, like drilling masonry, lots easier. The Bosch also has a 1/2 inch chuck, whereas the Craftsman has only a 3/8 inch capacity. The compact Boach has a belt clip that screws on to the base of the drill, but this model does not have a belt clip. The Craftsman has two features that the Bosch does not have. It has two self-store slots for the screwdriver bits, whereas the screwdriver bit for the Bosch simply sits in the bottom of the case, and is almost guaranteed to get lost if you don't have a case for your bits. The Craftsman also has two leveling bubbles -- one on the top and one on the back -- so if you want a perfectly horizontal or vertical hole, you are more likely to get it with the Craftsman. On the whole, I recommend the Bosch over the Craftsman for its extra power, good work light longer battery life and convenience of use.
