Great Buy!

I bought this drill after having issues with (and returning) a comparable Porter-Cable tool. The Hitachi is well made, durable, reliable, and simply a better value than anything else on the market. My company has one of these as well - it also has gone through many jobs without any problems whatsoever.
It is light and powerful - If you need a cordless hammer drill this is the one to buy.. PS i thought the included flashlight was really just silliness ..until I charged the battery and turned it on - it is amazingly bright and the adjustable base does make it quite useful - i was pleasantly surprised - bonus :)

Was Expecting Better

I was very pleased with the Hitachi KC18DHL kit (WH18DSAL 18V Impact Driver + DS18DSAL Drill + flashlight) I purchased over a year ago so I had no qualms about getting this hammer drill. The clutch went out on the DS18DSAL- my only complaint about that kit- so I purchased this hammer drill as a backup while the DS18DsAL went in for warranty repair. Hitachi has an excellent warranty on these tools. I was very disappointed in this hammer drill for several reasons, primarily the chuck. It requires two hands to tighten- one to hold the back ring and the other to tighten the chuck. The problem is that the back ring is too small and is difficult to grasp well. This leads to a greater chance for bits not being held properly.
This drill is not as powerful as the DS18DSAL drill either (400 vs 460 in/lbs of torque) though I wasn't expecting much of a notable difference. The lack of power was amplified by the trigger control which was not too precise. There is a pretty big jump in speed when the trigger transitions from lower speeds to higher speeds. Hitachi documentation doesn't mention this being a two-stage trigger but that is what it felt like to me. There was not a smooth, steady increase in speed and this led to a lack of control while drilling.
I noticed a looseness to the motor- I could actually raise the motor inside the housing by pressing on the chuck. I asked about this at the local authorized service center (when I dropped the DS18DSAL off for repair) and was informed that this was not normal. I gladly returned this drill to LOwes for a refund. It worked out well though because after I got the refund I went to Lowes tool-world and found they had the Hitachi DV18DBL Brushless Hammer Drill (3.0Ah) in stock! Woot! Now I am a happy camper. :)

good drill bad charger

The drill is light with acceptable power. The problem is the charger. I leave my charger plugged in with a battery engaged. The charger lasted 6 months. I filed for warranty but was told I had to drive to the nearest serviceing station (49 miles). Passed on the drive and bought a new charger. This time unplugged after use. 3 months latter the charger was dead. I've spoken to numerous people and all told me the Hatachi chargers are crap and Hatachi makes it difficult to file warranty.
FYI, my dewalt charger has remained plugged in for 3 years with no issues
