(and this didn't happen to my milwaukee or the dewalt I've used for years) I left the drill, with a bit in it, on the carpeted floor of my car for a day while driving down to my parents house for christmas time and the chuck presumably rusted. (My car has a sun-roof leak and tends to be moist in california wintertime) Now it does the auto-lock feature at just past the diameter of the bit which was in it. I cannot use the drill for many purposes, and I'm afraid I'll void my warranty by taking apart the tool and observing the chuck to find the oxidized, rather exceptionally non-noble iron alloy they chose for this model(...voiding that warranty despite having taken apart a worn and non-functional dewalt xrp drill with a 3-speed planetary gear system and re-assembled it to functionality)
I called customer support within hours of operation, but it was automatically and quickly forwarded to a voicemail service. I have not yet received a call back.
So I go on their website and look for the service center finder. I enter my zip code a number of times with varying search radii parameters. All queries yielded "invalid zip code" result. So no help there.
Another small gripe is the lack of multiple points of light emission from either tool, so bits and fasteners are more likely to be un-seen during instinctively performed nighttime operations than some other competitive products.
I hope one day that hitachi power tool products will be as utilitarian as their nail guns, but alas they are yet not.
And a piece of the rubber of the impact grip has fallen out of its little orifice somehow, so there's a little section of the rubber handgrip which is already falling apart.
Oh and the battery charger is extraordinarily loud. The fan is un-necessarily loud. It distrupts any music I have playing at all but the loudest playback volumes. And the charging circuitry also causes significant FM interference when placed close to my garage's home theater receiver while in FM mode.
Positives/neutrals relative to top-end competition:
I like the automatic stopping of the drill during bit-catching (large diameter steel-intended bits vs nails embedded in top plates, for example). Though frankly I'm not osteoporotic, so even the higher torque milwakee drill never broke a bone on me...but it's just an increased comfort factor.
I definitely like the auto shut-off feature of the drill at low battery to save the batteries from low discharge, but I fear that they allow too much of a voltage drop prior to cutoff to really maximize battery life. Tool torque is extremely weakened at the low end of the usable charge. However I am inadequately familiar with the lithium ion cell technology they use in order to definitively state whether this choice is sub-optimal for battery longevity.
I like the balance and ease of use afforded by this tool. I can carry it for longer times without feeling wrist fatigue. The batteries do last quite a while.
Of top-tier drills, this is mid-range for power and longevity.
All in all, I'd recommend searching for alternate combo kits which offer the battery saver feature.
